A Message from Principal Kami Tomberlain

June 2018

Dear Pioneer families,

I hope that everyone is enjoying the summer.  It’s been extraordinarily busy here on campus and there’s much more to come.  I look forward to welcoming each of you to Cupertino High School in mid-August, whether you are a returning family or new to this community.

Beginning of School:  Classes begin on August 20, 2018.  Juniors and seniors will have the opportunity to pick up their schedules, take school photos, and purchase ASB cards on August 13th; sophomores and freshmen will have that opportunity on August 14th.  We highly encourage you to purchase an ASB card for your child.  On Pioneer Days, it comes at the lowest possible price and includes a free spirit shirt. Funds raised on sales of ASB cards help the school fund athletic, social, and community-building events, as well as pay for the production of a tremendous yearbook.  Additionally, we’ll host a Tino Crew freshmen orientation on August 14th, with a Parent Crew orientation that evening.  Please make plans to attend if you are a new-to-Cupertino student and family.

New Schedule:  Cupertino High School will be implementing a new daily schedule in 2018-19, with later starts, four block days per week, and three tutorials.  Class starts no earlier than 8 am each day.  Please take a look at the schedule as you arrange carpools and after school activities.  This later start will mean that athletic and activity practice in the afternoons will go later than in the past, so please plan accordingly.

Tutorial update:  Students will be expected to check in during tutorial using their school-issued ID cards.  This will allow us to assign students who need assistance to a particular location and keep better track of where they are attending.  For most students, this will add a tiny step of scanning an ID card; for others, the new procedure will help them stay focused on their academic progress and give the adults a tool for assisting them in making good choices.  Once a month, we will pause the regular tutorials for an advisory focused on wellness, anti-bias, or future planning.

Focus for 2018-19:  As always, we focus on high levels of learning for all students. Our classes are engaging and challenging—and we offer further supports for students who struggle.  Additionally, we are focused on student wellness.  We encourage all of our students to take care of themselves by getting sufficient sleep, eating well, and finding opportunities to play and laugh.  Our school mantra is Work Hard, Play Hard, and Be Kind.  In 2018, we will continue our focus kindness to ensure a safe, unbiased environment for all of our students, a school where everyone belongs.  All of our students and staff will be expected to “Speak Up at School” when they hear bullying, name-calling, identity-based stereotypes, or hateful language, either in person or on-line. Additionally, parent education will be included as part of our PTSA meetings, among others. Our plan is to empower each of us with the tools to make Cupertino High School an even safer, more loving community.

Summer:  I hope that all of you are finding ways to rest and rejuvenate this summer, to read something wonderful, to learn something new and to get outside and enjoy our beautiful Bay Area.  My goals for the summer:  read; travel; enjoy time with family and friends.  You?

With Pioneer Pride,

Kami Tomberlain

Principal
